What is the subject for your photo essay and where did you take your photographs?- I took my photographs at an abandon substation for the PW&B passenger service and the Slade's Ferry Bridge which was opened in 1875 and closed in 1970, it was the first bridge to cross the Taunton River. I took my photos here because it shows urban decay in the building that has been abandoned since (at least) 1970.
Why did you select this place? - I selected this place because it was a great way to photograph urban decay. Many people have been in this building since it closed. I know this because there is lots of graffiti and a path made from wood, tires, and old fence leading into the building.
Why is it important to you?- This is important to me because i grew up always wondering what it was like on the inside and wondering what it was previously used for.
What concept are you trying to portray about this topic?- The concept i am trying to portray is urban decay. I like urban decay because no matter where you live there is always going to be old structures, and buildings
Visually, how did your images capture the narrative or “story” of your essay?- The images capture a old, neglected, collapsing, building. The inside and neglect makes the building look very depressing.
Discuss: the order and arrangement of your photos, composition, viewpoint, angle, lighting, color vs black and white....How did you visually unify your series of photos?- The order of photos is going from the outside, in, and back out. I kept the photos in color because it shows how old and dirty the building is. Most of the lighting is good because the photos were taking around mid-day and the view is usually at an angle except on or two photos.
